When you are on your own for a prolonged period of time, the silence creeping up can almost be felt like an oppressive force. There is no drama of the outside world to engage in anymore and what is left is your own inner workings. It can be quite a challenge to notice this and after a while the question can arise: who am I without the world? An emptiness can ensue which might feel really disturbing. But once you have traveled through this state, ‘the observer’ inside you takes over more and more and you become like a witness to yourself and the entire outside world. At that moment you start to experience yourself as pure consciousness instead of a separate self.
